I guess this is where it starts.
I’ve started a lot of journals over the years. Like many artists, I take interest in the material of it all. A nice binding, perhaps a strip of silk to mark where I’ve been, crisp smooth off-white paper with a light printed line to guide my words, or nothing, so my images remain unhindered. Most sit in a drawer, halfway filled, or just a couple of pages, I’ve only ever gotten to the end of a couple of these before I’ve found another object to hold my thoughts, and moved on to another ensemble of glue (or spiraled wire), paper, and cardboard.
But diaries on the web like these don’t have ends. there is no final page. You don’t get to close the front and back of life and have a neat, conceptually sold, well plotted story perfectly held between “once upon a time” and “happily ever after.”
Life has twists and turns, it doesn’t make sense, then it does, then it stops and you have to figure it all out again. There are false starts and false ends and after a perfect climax and resolution, the camera keeps rolling, the pages keep turning.
SO, this is one step I’ve been taking of many to organize this hectic life. I’ll be using this website to host my art, portfolio, market my stuff, and keep any possible fans (wow, that feels egotistical. to think of myself as capable of inspiring fandom, a term born out of fanaticism!) about upcoming releases of projects, events, happenings, shows, the occasional life benchmarks. this is just the beginning.
here’s some plans for this site:
a section to post some of my writing, published here and in other publications
I’m almost done with my first comic, In Jest, which I’ll be releasing on here by the end of the month, probably for free with the option to donate.
merchandising my art on t-shirts stickers and mugs, because we live in a capitalist society that requires us to market ourselves as products so that others can purchase and encompass our work as a part of their “identity”
a comic diary of sorts, when time permits
link all social media and build a system that posts regularly to all platforms so as to market the crap out of myself and yell to the whole world “I am here, and for sale!”
hopefully this site will bare witness to a fruitful and unpredictable future. It’s going to be a lot of hard work to get where I’m going. But time moves all on it’s own. Previously, in life, time has felt relentless, I’ve been ungrateful to its tireless march. All the time I’ve wanted for time to stop, to be given the opportunity to savor it, to not have to embrace the next day, the next year, the next chapter just yet. But sitting here, at this new beginning, I’m thankful the gears of time turn without me having to crank them. I’ve got a lot of hard work ahead of me to build the life I want without reservation, but time will bring all things to me if I just sit here in this moment patiently.
I’ll probably look back at this post someday and cringe.
Talk soon,
Quinn
